Meet our new Newsletter Editor,
Karen is quite versatile in her creativity.
Let's get to know Karen a little better.
"I was born and raised an anglophone in Quebec, until I met John Beasley and became an Army Wife for the next 22 years."
"After retirement, we moved to Loveland OH for 14 years then to Richmond VA for 10. We retired again, moving to The Pacific Northwest (we had a son just beginning a family in San Francisco and a Daughter and her family in Portland). Well, the best laid plans of mice and men........, son moved to Boston and daughter to Phoenix. So here we are!"
"I have dabbled in acrylics and quilted over the years. I had a fun 🤩 volunteer job when I lived in Richmond VA - at the Lewis Ginter Botanical Gardens. The big event of the year is Gardenfest - a magnificent exhibit of light, colour and plants."
" The Garden outdid itself each year. People came from all over the mid-Atlantic area to see it. I had an opportunity to do some huge things - like a 20-foot rainbow, an 8-foot octopus, huge flowers for photo ops, thrones for Santa, metal and mesh lit up animal sculptures and miscellaneous furniture. We started making props in early June.)"
"I work best when the adrenaline is flowing. I have participated in several challenges since COVID19 began. I enjoy collage, both with wet media and with fiber. My first was a SAQA (Studio Art Quilt Association in Houston) Corona Quarantine challenge for which I made a 28”x28” wall hanging entitled “Stay at Home” which is basically nine small fabric collages depicting places in which people are staying. I participated in an April Cloth Doll challenge organized by Elinor Peace Bailey- the queen of doll makers. Then it just seemed that everything dried up. I was getting bored with just making masks."
"As a friend said, “ I feel like I am becoming unmoored" and I think everyone is now feeling like that. This confinement is like a never ending snow day. Anyhow, I am “moored” again with the help of more challenges from various fiber arts groups, uTube videos and Domestika classes. I have even been able to combine many techniques to make masks. My “I've had two shots” mask was a challenge from a British Textile group, combining text and hand stitching, but I also combined photo transfer, reverse appliqué and machine piecing."
"I've got my mojo back! And now that I have had two shots, I am meeting outdoors with other “two shot” friends - so I am having fun 🤩"
